Called Harry, the product comprises two curved, laminated components held together by solid, wooden wedges.

This simple concept led to a charming stool which can also function as a footrest or a side table. The Harry stool has pleasing tactile qualities and is available in two heights and three surface finishes; natural, black and white stained.

The latest Green Star-rated building, the Gauge at Melbourne’s Docklands, is the next big thing for Lend Lease, which is riding the green style wave after the success of its award-winning building, 30 The Bond, in Sydney. The building was complete in April 2008
Throughout The Gauge, where the focus is on the individual, traditional desks interplay with work style alternatives. The cosy lounge area by the open fire is complete with board games and magazines, it’s a sanctuary for personal time. The environment is diverse managing to keep it social, but professional. The glazed meetings rooms with a natural stream of light, foster collaboration and team work, while elsewhere den-like concrete walls enclose for privacy. This sophisticated result reflects the authenticity and diversity of Melbourne’s commercial and cultural aesthetics.

Parisian interior designer Joseph Dirand’s work graces Grupo Habita’s Distrito Capital in Mexico City.
Grupo Habita has unveiled its 8th hotel, Distrito Capital, in Mexico City’s international business neighborhood of Santa Fe, helping the city to cement its reputation as the leading 21st-Century metropolis. With Distrito Capital, the company once again delivers its signature chic and outstanding service to previously unthought-of environments and transforms them into instant classics.
The latest, most arresting, interior design trends – this time courtesy of Joseph Dirand – come into their own at Distrito Capital. Grupo Habita left nothing to chance; from the most prominent vintage furnishings to details like John Pawson’s cutlery, and even in the smallest (yet significant) in-room accessories from Acqua di Parma.

In all spaces, rigorous horizontals and verticals are enhanced by modern furnishings courtesy of Platt, Hansen and Aalto Artek Aalto A110 Pendant Lamp, Hans Wegner CH008 Coffee Table in the lobby, planter low table from Knoll, Organic Chairs by Vitra, and includes pieces by German Industrial Designer Dieter Rams among others.

New Paintings 21 July – 9 August 2009 exhibtion at Tim Olsen Gallery, Paddington Sydney
Matthew Johnson’s pigmented surfaces demonstrate a delight in the application and layering of paint. His studio is full of precious pigments that recall the work of Japanese nihonga- style painters who are trained in traditional methods of mixing rare pigments. Often made from natural materials such as shell, nihongo-style painters mix pigments that glisten with different textures Johnson uses the iridescent pigment iriodin which is made from sand to imbue the canvases with an effervescent glow.

In the series Ambrosial light, an intimate scale is enhanced by a tranquil palette. The fragility and delicacy of the fine grid is overlaid with pastel colours from sumptuous lilacs to misty blues. Like wafts of clouds, these smaller paintings seem hazy as colour is distilled into harmonious pools of light. Dissipating spheres suggest an experimental quality reinforced by the fact that Johnson sensitively observes shifting light sources throughout the day. The saturated and bleached light of Australian conditions imbues these works with a silken, atmospheric quality. Ultimately, Johnson inflects his abstraction with a reverie for texture and light. Are we in the middle or end of the Wallpaper craze. I’m not sure which way to go with that question, but some wallpapers are literally wallflowers and others stand out in a crowd. Here is one woman who gets my attention in the world of paper - Deborah Bowness.

She has been designing and hand printing wallpapers for seven years, developing her unique design style and the quality of her product. This is art for your walls. Deborah’s quirky wallpapers can be found at Empire Vintage in Australia.
